Founded by Benjamin Franklin Gilbert in the later part of the Nineteenth Century, Takoma Park was one of the first planned suburbs in Maryland’s Montgomery County. Referred to as the "Berkeley of The East", the town is known to have a liberal community, and residents are very supportive of their neighbors and the community as a whole. Several policies have been developed by the town to maintain a level of environmental consciousness and encourage affordable housing to stimulate diversity.
The community is popular with residents for its location and laid back lifestyle. Takoma Park is located directly outside of the Washington, D.C. border between several other major suburbs. Community involvement in sports is high, and baseball, softball, and soccer leagues are organized in collaboration with the Recreation Department.
Takoma Park offers many educational opportunities. Straver University, Washington Theological Union, and Columbia Union College are some of the institutions of higher education in and around the area. Public school students also receive a quality education -- at schools within the Montgomery County Public Schools District. With the great amenities this town offers, along with its proximity to Washington, D.C., Takoma Park provides endless possibilities to its residents. |
