At the intersection of two major roadways in Montgomery County, Maryland sits the comfortable community of Damascus. The town has a long and rich history, as it was planned and laid out by Edward Hughes, the area postmaster, after being granted permission by President James Madison.
There is always something to do and see in Damascus. One of the big attractions is the soft-serve ice cream created by Jimmie Cone, which is extremely popular among residents and out-of-town visitors alike. The annual Damascus Community Fair attracts many people and is celebrated during the first week of September. For horse lovers, there are three equestrian centers in and around Damascus.
The Damascus Sports Association has proven to be very beneficial for the students and youth of the town. The DSA supports amateur athletes and has helped the area produce some very talented people. The Damascus Post 171 of the American Legion has also helped the community in organizing several civic and charitable endeavors. These range from sponsoring high school scholarships to downtown Christmas Decoration installations.
In the past few decades, many real estate developments have sprouted from the vast farmlands that previously covered the area. Damascus encompasses a beautiful and sprawling residential area, and the area offers a variety of real estate options. The downtown area has also undergone significant growth in the last few years. Though cherishing the easy, rural lifestyle, Damascus is comparatively more urbanized than nearby communities and serves as a commercial center to many of them. Residents of Damascus enjoy a small, charming town with great amenities. |
